“I have nothing to wear” is one of the most common pain points we hear from our clients. But when we go to their closets, they generally have tons of clothes. They just don’t wear them.
It’s like the joke about the construction worker who kept complaining about getting meatloaf sandwiches in his lunch. Every day, the same thing, the same meatloaf sandwich. Finally, his co-workers had had enough and said, “if you hate meatloaf so much, why don’t you ask your wife to make you something else?” To which the guy said, “but I make my own lunch.”
When our clients say they have nothing to wear, it’s usually that they just keep making the same lunch (of clothes), wearing the same thing over and over again. But honestly, it doesn’t take a lot to make your looks different and super interesting.
You just have to identify the real issue, which usually doesn’t have anything to do with the amount of clothes you own.
If you look in your closet and see nothing but grey, blue, black and cream, it might seem like you’re eating meatloaf everyday too. (Ok, we’ll stop with the meatloaf metaphor now.) The good news is that these neutral colors can be the foundation of an interesting and versatile rotation. What’s likely missing is the “fun” –– the print, texture, color and shine–– that give you more options and make dressing so much easier and fun.
Here are our go-to tips for a stylish and workable everyday wardrobe:
1) Have 5 tops per every 1 bottom. So, if you have 3 bulletproof bottoms and 15 tops, you have 45 possible combinations to get you through almost 2 months without repeating a look!
2) Add some cropped jackets and cardigans to the mix and things start to really get interesting.
3) If all your tops are some shade of cream, navy or black, no matter how hard you try to create some variety you’ll eventually get bored. Every closet needs solids but it’s also key for your tops to have print, texture, color and shine to some varying degree to keep it exciting.
4) Prepare your outfit or at least think about it the day before to avoid grabbing the most tried, true (and tired) combination.
5) Accessorize – We’re not talking Christmas tree decorating here but a few pieces that reflect your style and that you are comfortable wearing everyday. A long gold chain goes a long way.
6) If all fails, throw on a heel! The higher the heel the better you’ll feel!
