We love a good shortcut.
In this post-covid world where everything from office appropriate to business casual is being redefined, we could all use some tips and rules to simplify getting dressed. Our clients depend on us to help them demystify the get-dressed-and-out-the-door process.
The Third Piece Rule
Do you know someone who always looks polished and put together? Or noticed street photography of people going nowhere special looking effortlessly chic? Chances are they’re deploying the third piece rule.
So, what is it?
Whenever we mention the third piece to our clients, we’re often met with a blank stare followed by, “What’s that?”
What it is, is exactly what it says. Most of us consider top and bottom pieces getting dressed. But to take that extra step (or even know how) to elevate and complete our look, requires more coffee or creativity than we can muster in the morning.
How’s it work?
The third piece is your twist — adding interest and dimension to your outfit, infusing some personality to your look. We’re not talking about shoes or bags here — the third piece is a detail that can elevate an otherwise ordinary look.
Bonus, it works for both women and men! For women, it can be a blazer, cropped leather/denim jacket, a cool cardigan, sweater, hat, scarf and even a belt or statement piece of jewelry. For men, the third piece can be a sports coat, vest, sweater, shirt-jacket, tie, scarf or a third piece accessory like a pocket square.
