“Loving a pair of jeans is like loving a person. It takes time to find a perfect one and requires care and mending to make it last”
~ Emily Current & Meritt Elliott
How many pairs of jeans do you own? We bet there’s somewhere between 7-10 (more?) in your closet right now. But how many do you actually wear? For most of our clients, jeans are usually the largest and most fraught-with-emotion category in their closets. And the most-often worn are usually on top of an otherwise untouched stack of outdated, ill-fitting, or failed experiments that never, ever looked good.
Why do we keep jeans we don’t wear? Maybe we’ll figure out one day how to wear them? Or fit into them again, one day? Or we pretend that we have choices, even though we only wear one or two pairs, max?
Whatever the reason, if you are holding onto jeans you don’t, and probably won’t ever, wear -— you’re in a “denim rut”. The problem is that most people don’t know how to climb out.
But it’s worth figuring out because jeans are the most versatile pieces of clothes we own. They’re appropriate almost anywhere. Probably the most trusted silhouette in the past decade has been the skinny jean, mainly because this shape works for almost every body type, age, and occasion. It’s easy to dress up or down.
But come on, don’t tell me that you’re not bored with it. I know we are.
We understand you may be hesitant to try something new. Finding a pair of jeans you love is the holy grail. And once you do, it’s easy to stick with it and wear it into the ground.
But if you’re craving to mix up your jeans game and have no idea where to start, we’re here to tell you that it’s 100% possible to find more than one shape and style of jeans that look great on your body. All you need is a little guidance, some patience, and a small chunk of time.
Here are some click-through links to our favorite shapes trending at the moment from the classic skinny and boyfriend fit to baggy, high-rise, and cropped styles. Even a pajama (pandemic?) inspired jogger has made it into the mix that we can get behind!
Our top 10 rules for finding the right fit of jeans in fun shapes and wearing them with style:
Experiment and stretch your comfort zone — at least ½ of the jeans in your closet should be in different shapes, weights, rises, and washes to cover all your jean bases.
Persevere! Give yourself some time to shop for jeans, try on as many as possible and be patient with the process and yourself. Finding the perfect jean takes time! And remember, not every shape is for everyone. Tip: to maximize your time, it helps to shop at a department store, which carries multiple brands under one roof!
Shop high/low – You don’t have to break the bank to own a great pair of jeans. Brands like Zara, Madewell, AllSaints, and Levis are perfectly respectable and often times even better than the $$$ versions.
Give white a try! When buying white jeans, stay away from unforgiving thin, stretchy denim. Look for thicker denim to avoid showing underwear lines and lumps/bumps/cellulite.
Steer clear of overly ripped jeans — a little tear here and there for added character is fine, but too many holes have an age limit and do not make for a very sophisticated look.
Keep an eye out for small details that make a big difference — such as a cool asymmetrical button fly, stitching, and size of the pockets. For a more sophisticated look, keep stitching on the subtle side and avoid overly whiskered wash. When it comes to the pockets, remember the bigger the back pockets the smaller the butt looks and vice versa.
Know your number – Every closet should have a solid 6-8 pair of jeans.
Pay attention to the wash – The darker the jean the dressier it is for both men or women. It’s also more slimming and flattering, regardless of your body type.
Considering colored or printed jeans? If you must, buy in moderation because they get very little play. That said, if you’re craving some added variety, there’s no better time than Spring!
Styling tip: do not wear high boots over skinny jeans unless you’re 22 or Cher.
